Brighton and Hove really is a city of festivals.

From the biggest arts Festival in England to comedy, food, music, film and artists' open houses, you'll usually find somewhere in the city that is in full festival swing.

And its not just the summer months that draw the festival crowds. The city knows how to celebrate arts and culture year round with Brighton festivals packing venues and filling the streets right across the calendar. 

From silver screen and comedy gold to the local fare of the Brunswick Festival and Sussex Beer Festival, check out the timeline below to see when Brighton festival fever is firing up the city throughout the year.


Brighton Science Festival - explore where we came from, deal with where we are and debate where we might go in the future! This is the festival that makes science fun...

VegFestUK - it’s all about healthy options… This weekend event showcases the best in vegetarian cooking, with competitions and over 100 stalls offering films, cooking demonstrations, music, performances and specialist talks.


Sussex Beer Festival - a celebration of beer, cider, perries and wine, many from the local area, the Sussex Beer Festival is a great opportunity to sample real ale in a friendly, welcoming environment in the heart of Hove.

WhaleFest - WhaleFest is a family friendly event that appeals to everyone with an enthusiasm for whales and dolphins and the marine environment – a celebration of passion, science, music and art.


Brighton Marathon - One of the biggest running events of the year takes over the city for one big weekend of activity including the Expo; 10k; mini mile as well as the main event!


Brighton Festival - the biggest and boldest arts festival in the UK, Brighton Festival is a creative cornucopia of world-class art and entertainment.

Brighton Fringe - England’s largest arts festival and one of the biggest Fringe festivals in the world. Brighton Fringe is the city’s answer to Edinburgh and offers the perfect complement of cabaret, comedy, classical concerts, club nights, theatre, exhibitions and more from its vast programme.

Artists Open Houses - taking place every May Brighton Artists Open Houses is the biggest free arts event in Britain, offering a fantastic opportunity to see artwork displayed in a domestic setting, as well as buy affordable work direct from local artists.

HOUSE - the sister festival to Artists Open Houses is a contemporary and visual arts event exploring the theme of art and the domestic space.

Charleston Festival - home and country meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group, Charleston Festival conjurs up an impressive array of literary and artistic heavyweights for a rousing mix of talks, discussions, films and workshops.

The Great Escape - Europe's leading new music festival, the Great Escape showcases over 200 new local and international artists across 35 venues over 3 days.  

Elderflower Festival - Family-friendly 'boutique' festival in the Sussex countryside. Packed with activities for kids of all ages, music & entertainment, locally sourced food, a woodland spa & lots of magical touches!

Foodies Festival - Visit Hove Lawns to enjoy an array of culinary activities including a live entertainment stage, cooking demonstrations and tasty treats from some of the city's top restaurants.

Funk the Family Festival - An outdoor festival for the whole family in Hove Park featuring music; circus shows; cinema and more!


TAKEPART Festival - This is a two week showcase of hundreds of events, activities and taster sessions across the city to encurage people to get active.


Paddle Round the Pier - Europe's largest annual beach festival takes place by Hove Lawns and on the beachfront. The first weekend of July is packed full of events for novices and serious athletes, and of course the Paddle Around the Pier!

Trans Pride - Putting the 'T' first. The 3 day event includes a film night; parade; party and picnic on the beach.

Brighton Kite Festival - watch the skies of Brighton come alive with stunning aerial displays and enjoy activities for all the family in beautiful Stanmer Park. 

Love Supreme Festival - enjoy some of the world's best Jazz artists at this new & upcoming Festival in Glynde, near Lewes. Set in beautiful surroundings, the festival is easily accesible by shuttle bus from Brighton.


Brighton Pridequite simply the best Pride festival in the UK, Brighton Pride celebrates everything lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

Brighton MOD Weekender - The original celebration of sixties modernist style lasts all weekend and sees a vast array of Vespas descend on Brighton seafront.

Brunswick Festival - celebrating the diverse nature of the Brunswick area of Hove, Brunswick festival offers a fun and friendly mix of foodie treats, street theatre and jazz.

Brighton Racecourse August Festival - experience a taste of the good life; sip Champagne, admire the hats and, of course, watch the races.  

Shakedown Festival - the definitive music festival on the South Coast for fans of electronic music. Over 18s only.


Fiery Food Festival - a celebration of spicy food and the chilli in particular. Hot food and products are on sale as well as The National Chilli Awards, chilli eating competitions, music, comedy and more.

Brighton Japan Festival - An international celebration of Japanese theatre, performance, arts, films and culture.

Brighton Art Fair one of the largest art exhibitions on the south coast, bringing together a host of talented painters, printmakers, photographers and sculptors.  

Brighton Digital Festival - cementing Brighton’s status as a leading digital destination, the Brighton Digital Festival is a season of exhibitions, performances, meet-ups, workshops and outdoor events.   


Brighton Photo Biennial - an ambitious celebration of international photographic practice firmly established in the national and international calendar.

Brighton Comedy Festival - The Brighton Comedy Festival laughs its way through 3 weeks of thigh slapping comedy, establishing itself as one of the top comedy events in the country.

Brighton Early Music Festival - pushing boundaries of what is known as 'early music' and seeking out links with other musical styles, Brighton Early Music Festival makes early music funky.

City Reads - An annual citywide reading festival which aims to spread a love of books and ideas to the widest possible audience.


London to Brighton Veteran Car Run - made famous by the film Genevieve and the world's longest running motoring event, the London to Brighton car run offers a fantastic opportunity to catch extraordinary automobiles on the 60 mile run from Hyde Park to Brighton.

CINECITY - Brighton's annual celebration of the moving image, CINECITY features a global mix of premieres and previews, treasures from the archives plus the latest digital adventures.

MADE Brighton - Welcoming over 120 innovative and original makers and designers to show and sell their work directly to the public.

Oska Bright Film Festival - This international showcase of short films made by people with learning disabilities is a dynamic force for change and a very lively festival.


Christmas Artists Open Housesa fantastic chance for visitors to explore around 100 houses across the city and see and buy the work of local artists. Or simply enjoy a mince pie and mulled wine!

Burning the Clocks - unique opportunity to gather and carry lanterns through Brighton, culminating in a spectacular pyrotechnic and firework display. Burning the Clocks takes place every year on the Winter Solstice (21st December) to welcome in the lengthening days.
